Anxious? Time to Write a Better Story

anxiety-storiesWhatever we want to achieve in life there will be challenges. We all know this to be true. So how is it that we manage to turn life’s inevitable challenges into ‘problems’?  The simple answer is fear.

  • Fear that if we act, bad things will happen.
  • Fear that something unexpected might happen and it might be bad.
  • Fear that we will not achieve the outcome we planned within the arbitrary timescale we sought to impose on an uncaring universe

If we want to solve our problems, we need to stop generating fear. Fear and anxiety afflict millions of people, to the point where they are disabled from achieving anything.

But where does the anxiety come from?

It comes from thinking.

We visualise and we talk to ourselves. That is what ‘thinking’ is. Thinking is the story we continuously weave, around and around our minds, in pictures, sounds and ultimately feelings.

When we tell ourselves that bad things are going to happen, or we run vivid scenarios through our imaginations, we become anxious. Our nervous system cannot distinguish between frightening fantasies and reality, so anxiety becomes inevitable.

Yes. That’s right. Anxiety comes from fantasising and imagining. That is why we have problems.

The trick then, is to take control of our imaginations. This is why I teach individual clients and teams how to change their stories. After all, if the story you are imagining is producing anxiety, it is clearly time to create a better story. A story that is more useful, positive, even inspiring.

You might also have noticed that when you are anxious you cannot think clearly. That is how the anxiety becomes self-perpetuating. We get trapped in a loop of bad stories-fear-more bad stories-more fear.

One of the best ways I know to create an empowering story is to exaggerate and distort the old, dysfunctional story to a point where it simply disintegrates. That gives us a breathing space. It is in that space that our creativity has a chance to explode into life. Once we engage our creative story teller, we come up with solutions and find the resources we are looking for.
